LENT SERIES: STAY AWAKE AND PRAY IN THE MIDST OF SUFFERING

Suffering is one of the most universal experiences of human life. No one is completely immune to it. It comes in many forms—loss, sickness, disappointment, betrayal, financial struggles, or deep emotional pain. In the midst of these difficult seasons, many people feel overwhelmed, confused, and even spiritually exhausted. Yet the message of the Bible continually calls believers to a powerful spiritual posture: to stay awake and pray. The call to watch and pray is especially powerful in the moments leading up to the suffering of Jesus Christ. On the night before His crucifixion, in the quiet garden of Garden of Gethsemane, He spoke words that echo through generations: “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” — Gospel of Matthew 26:41 These words reveal a profound truth: suffering is not only a physical or emotional struggle, but also a spiritual battle. Prayer becomes the lifeline that connects believers to God’s strength when their own strength begins to fail.

The Reality of Suffering

The Christian faith does not deny suffering. In fact, the Bible openly acknowledges it. From the struggles of Job to the persecution of the early church described in the Acts of the Apostles, believers have always walked through seasons of hardship. Suffering often raises difficult questions: Why is this happening to me? Where is God in my pain? How long will this season last? These questions are deeply human. Even Jesus Christ expressed deep anguish when He prayed: “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me.” — Gospel of Matthew 26:39 This moment reminds us that suffering does not mean a lack of faith. Instead, it reveals the depth of our humanity. The difference between despair and spiritual endurance often lies in whether we remain spiritually awake and continue to pray.

What It Means to Stay Awake Spiritually

To “stay awake” spiritually means remaining attentive to God even when life becomes dark and confusing. It means refusing to let suffering numb our faith or distance us from God. Spiritual sleep can take many forms: losing hope, becoming spiritually indifferent, allowing bitterness to take root, abandoning prayer. When suffering continues for a long time, the temptation to spiritually “fall asleep” becomes stronger. This is exactly what happened to the disciples in the Garden of Gethsemane. While Jesus Christ wrestled in prayer, His closest friends could not stay awake. Their exhaustion was understandable, yet it symbolized something deeper: human weakness in the face of spiritual trials. Jesus’ instruction to “watch and pray” was not simply about staying physically awake. It was about remaining spiritually alert, aware that difficult moments require deeper dependence on God.

Prayer as Strength in Suffering

Prayer is often misunderstood as merely asking God for help. In reality, prayer is much more than a request; it is a relationship. Through prayer, believers bring their fears, pain, doubts, and hopes before God. When suffering intensifies, prayer becomes a place of transformation. In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus Christ entered the garden overwhelmed with sorrow. Yet after praying, He emerged with renewed resolve and peace. Prayer did not remove the suffering ahead, but it strengthened Him to face it. The same principle applies to believers today. Prayer may not immediately change circumstances, but it often changes the heart and perspective of the one who prays. Through prayer we find: strength when we feel weak, peace when anxiety overwhelms us, hope when the future looks uncertain, comfort in the presence of God

The Struggle to Pray During Pain

Ironically, the moments when we most need prayer are often the moments when prayer feels hardest. Pain can make prayer difficult. Words fail. Emotions become tangled. Some people feel too tired, too discouraged, or too confused to pray. Yet the Bible reminds us that God understands this weakness. In the Epistle to the Romans 8:26, the apostle Paul the Apostle writes that the Spirit helps us in our weakness and intercedes for us when we do not know what to pray. This means that prayer does not require perfect words. Sometimes the most honest prayers are the simplest ones: “Lord, help me.” “God, I feel lost.” “Father, give me strength.” God listens not only to eloquent prayers but also to the quiet cries of a weary heart.

Watching Against Temptation in Suffering

Another reason Jesus emphasized watchfulness is because suffering can open the door to spiritual temptation. When pain lingers, people may be tempted to: lose faith, turn toward destructive habits, become bitter or resentful, withdraw from community and worship. These responses are understandable, yet they can deepen the darkness of suffering rather than heal it. Spiritual vigilance helps believers recognize these dangers early. By staying awake in faith and prayer, they guard their hearts against despair and temptation. Prayer acts like a spiritual anchor. It keeps believers connected to God when storms threaten to pull them away.

Learning Trust Through Suffering

One of the most mysterious aspects of suffering is how it can shape spiritual maturity. While suffering itself is painful, it often becomes a place where faith deepens. In the Epistle of James 1:2–3, believers are encouraged to consider trials as opportunities for growth because testing produces perseverance. This does not mean suffering is enjoyable or easy. Instead, it acknowledges that God can bring spiritual transformation even out of painful circumstances. Prayer becomes the space where this transformation happens. When believers pray through suffering, they gradually learn: trust beyond understanding, patience in uncertainty, dependence on God rather than self, compassion for others who suffer. These qualities form the heart of mature faith.

The Example of Jesus in Gethsemane

The prayer of Jesus Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane provides one of the most powerful models for believers facing suffering.

His prayer included three important elements.

Honest Emotion

Jesus openly expressed His sorrow and anguish. This teaches believers that they do not need to hide their emotions from God.

Faith does not mean pretending everything is fine. True faith brings real feelings before God.

Persistent Prayer

Jesus prayed repeatedly, returning to the Father again and again. Persistence in prayer reflects deep trust. Even when answers seem delayed, believers continue to seek God’s presence.

Surrender to God’s Will

Ultimately, Jesus concluded His prayer with surrender: “Yet not as I will, but as You will.” — Gospel of Matthew 26:39. This moment reveals the deepest purpose of prayer—not merely hanging circumstances, but aligning the human heart with God’s will.

Community and Prayer in Times of Suffering

Although personal prayer is essential, suffering should not be faced alone. God designed the Christian life to be lived in community. The early believers described in the Acts of the Apostles often gathered to pray during times of persecution and hardship. Their collective prayers strengthened faith and encouraged perseverance. When believers share their burdens with others, they experience: encouragement, support, accountability, spiritual strength. Sometimes the prayers of others carry us when we feel too weak to pray ourselves.

Hope Beyond Suffering

The call to watch and pray is ultimately rooted in hope. Christianity teaches that suffering is not the final chapter of the story. The suffering of Jesus Christ was followed by resurrection and victory. This truth reminds believers that God’s purposes extend beyond the pain of the present moment. The apostle Paul the Apostle wrote that present sufferings cannot compare with the glory that will be revealed in the future. Prayer keeps believers connected to that hope. When we pray, we remember that: God is still present. God is still working. God’s promises remain true. Even when circumstances seem dark, faith looks forward to the light that God will bring.

Practical Ways to Stay Awake and Pray

Remaining spiritually alert during suffering requires intentional habits. Here are several practical ways believers can stay awake and pray.

Set aside regular moments for prayer.

Even short daily prayers can sustain faith during difficult seasons.

Pray honestly.

Speak to God with sincerity rather than trying to sound spiritual.

Reflect on Scripture.

Reading passages from the Book of Psalms can help believers find words for their own prayers.

Seek prayer support from others.

Sharing burdens within a faith community strengthens spiritual resilience.

Practice gratitude.

Even in suffering, remembering small blessings can renew hope.

These simple practices help believers remain spiritually awake when suffering threatens to overwhelm them.

Suffering is an unavoidable part of life, yet it does not have to lead to despair. The call of Jesus Christ to “watch and pray” offers a path of spiritual resilience. In the darkest moments, prayer becomes a refuge where believers encounter God’s presence. It transforms fear into trust, weakness into strength, and despair into hope. Staying awake in faith means refusing to surrender to spiritual numbness. It means continuing to seek God even when answers seem distant. Just as Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane before facing the cross, believers today are invited to bring their suffering before God in prayer.

And in that sacred space of prayer, they discover a powerful truth: even in suffering, they are not alone.
